And we…I mean EYE am finally back with a new #SundaySounds. Here’s to working on consistency as I embark on my 30th year of life. My birthday was March 25th and I turned thirty! I went to South Africa the week before my birthday and a pseudo celebration. It was so dope to meet my #SmartBrownGirls in Johannesburg. And then the week of my birthday, I put a pause on the YouTube (#PopSnark will be back next week) and reveled in the dope live music that hit Houston/Dallas all in the week of my birth. Look at how the stars aligned!
First up, I went to see Stevie Wonder on the Dallas stop of his “Songs in the Key of Life” tour with TheKGLifestyle. Two single women in a room of couples as Stevie sang an album of love songs…lol. It was still awesome. Literally sounds like you are sitting in the studio with Stevie. Later that week I got to stare into Erykah Badu’s green eyes and I almost got caught up. She is stellar. All things awesome. Her voice is golden and you really don’t realize how great of a range she has until your hear her live. Chill af…vibing. Erykah is my spirit animal. Oh and it was a very sweet bonus to hear her backup singer, Durand Bernarr, whom she plucked straight from YouTube. Good feelings abound. Lastly, Jazmine Sullivan finally made it to Houston. I put in a request for an interview and ended up with press passes. So I was content and my life will forever be golden now that I have heard Masterpiece (Mona Lisa) live. I sang my tone deaf voice out *emoji praise hands.*
Oh and I came back from South Africa with it now being solidified into American pop culture, hello Trevor Noah! All the references to Zulu, Xhosa, apartheid and whatever reawakening Kendrick Lamar experienced in South Africa are all over his latest album, To Pimp a Butterfly, so I’m ending the playlist with my favorite track from the album, ‘Alright.’ Because that entirely encapsulates how I feel about life now….”we gon’ be alright!”
